BREAKING: AN OPEN LETTER TO INEC Dear INEC Nigeria

@inecnigeria,

Trust you and your staff are all keeping well in this amazing economy. I recently noticed that I have been blocked on your official Twitter account and it is truly heartwarming to know that my opinions and concerns about how you run elections in Nigeria have been deeply heard by you and are so factually valued that it disturbs you.

To start with, let me express my gratitude for this unexpected honour. It’s not every day that a concerned citizen like myself gets the privilege of shaking federal tables to the point of breaking it and being blocked by an INSTITUTION.

Your actions have underscored the importance you place on silencing and restricting the Nigerian people from their democratic rights in a democratic society. Block us virtually, block our PVCs, block BVAS from functioning, block the factual votes from counting, block us from our DEMOCRACY. Block, Block Block.

One would wonder why INEC is yet to team up with Dangote to produce blocks. All you do is RESTRICT and for a body created to LIBERATE that is very pathetic. It would amuse you that on your many restriction games, my PVC was nominated in a game of hide and seek in a cupboard in Lagos reserved exclusively for “non-indigenes” and I can only imagine the countless citizens that are unaware that their PVCs are playing hide and seek in various States instead of contributing to the democratic process.

Blocking me on Twitter is undoubtedly the modern day equivalent of blocking the release of PVCs and blocking the FACTUAL counts of our votes, a symbolic gesture that perfectly shows your commitment to obstructing the Nigerian people from exercising their sacred rights to vote.

I contributed to your institution, gave my bits, took an unpaid leave from work to register people across the country. Spent personal funds to ensure thousands get their PVCs, even though a lot of them were later disenfranchised in the amazing elections your Commission have been running since February 25th. I even reported irregularities in Niger and Yobe States where non-citizens were being registered in their numbers illegally. It warms my heart to know that your social media prowess is only rivaled by your ability to organize and run free and fair elections in Nigeria. But despite these disappointments, I am always glad that the power of the people is much greater than the people in power and while your institution choose to block individuals on social media, you can NEVER block the spirit of the Nigerian people determined to exercise their rights and get a better country, so that even your staff, can afford to buy bread and rice.

Finally my most high INEC, I extend my deepest gratitude for the unexpected detour into the world of blocked accounts. I eagerly anticipate the day when all PVCs you have also blocked, escape their hiding spots. I hope you stop stifling democratic voices and not restrict Nigerians. Our voices must be heard and respected. Remember that the power of the people is ALWAYS GREATER than the people in power. Regards, Serah Ibrahim.
